Story Projects

After lots of hard work all of the dragons have finished their stories! Each student chose whether to work alone, with a partner or small group. They planned their stories then chose how to share them. Enjoy!

Grade 3 Buddies

On Thursday we had our final visit from our Grade 3 Buddies. They made "choose your own ending" books for us. We read the books then played together for a while. Enjoy!

Working with Numbers

In Kindergarten we spend a lot of time working with numbers up to 20. We want the students to be flexible in their mathematical thinking, and have a solid number sense. It's good to have a mental representation of anchor numbers like 5 and 10, which is why we use ten frames so often. Today we used a "number relationship mat" to show many different ways of thinking about and representing numbers.

Body Project Videos

Better late than never... Here are the videos from our body unit. (please note not all students chose to make a video). Enjoy!

Story Elements

This week the Dragons learned about the story elements character, setting, problem and solution. Today they worked in small groups to retell and record on a graphic organizer the elelents of a familiar story. They had to communicate and collaborate with each other, deciding who would do which part of the work.

Robert Magnuson Visit

ISM Kindergarten was so excited to have local author/illustrator Robert Magnuson come and speak to our classes. The boys and girls enjoyed hearing about Robert's influences as a child, how he learned to draw and where he gets ideas for stories from! The students also got to watch Robert draw and were then invited to be creative and design their own instruments from different objects. Robert came back later in the day to see the student's designs!

Early Place Value Concepts

This week the Dragons started exploring early place value concepts. We started with representing teen numbers on the ten-frame and seeing how many are leftover, then writing equations to represent that number. For example 10+3=13. We also enjoyed this song about place value:

Student Led Conferences

Here are some photos from our Student-Led Conferences. Enjoy!

Fun Math Songs

The Dragons have enjoyed these fun math songs which help explain the relationship bewteen addition and subtraction as well as reinforce the mathematical vocabulary. Enjoy!

Grade 3 Buddies

While the Dragons were studying about the human body, our grade 3 buddies came for a visit. They helped the Dragons trace an outline of their bodies, then label the different body systems. It was lots of fun!
